BIF Presents First 2017 Summit Community Scholarship to Providence Teacher
The Business Innovation Factory has presented Ramiro Gonzales, a local Providence teacher, with its first BIF2017 Community Scholarship. Mr. Gonzales was selected in part by BIF to be this year’s first Community Scholarship recipient as a way of honoring National Teacher Appreciation Week. BIF2017 Summit Community Scholarships will be presented to a total of fifty deserving community members.
Ramiro Gonzales is a 9th and 10th grade science teacher at 360 High School, a student-centered school, designed by students with help from the BIF Student Experience Lab’s SD4E (Students Design for Education) initiative. He is acknowledged as one of the most popular faculty members with students, who attest that they have grown to love the class and the subject being taught because of his emphasis on experiential learning. Ramiro Gonzales has incorporated project-based learning into his curriculum to deepen student learning of content and engage them in interactive activities. He has been effective in creating meaningful relationships with students and establishing a place where a diverse group of inner-city young people can excel.
His students are more than happy to share how they feel about him. Mr. Gonzales is “the OG of 360,” says Ayo. “He is wise, he has lots of experience, and he understands how we learn,” adds Yaen. Isabel notes: “he makes me laugh and learn at the same time.” And Sharidy says “he is nice and funny and can teach in English and Spanish for us.” These are just a few of many students at 360 High School whose lives have been transformed under Ramiro Gonzales’ influence.
“When you meet Ramiro, one thing is clear — he is an amazing teacher. On top of all the fun, creative projects he uses in his classroom, Ramiro brings such an immense energy to the school. His excitement is contagious, and it is clear to see how much that means to his students. It is truly inspiring to watch him teach,” says BIF Experience Designer Louie Montoya. “There is no one more deserving than Ramiro to receive the first BIF2017 Community Scholarship this year.”
Each year, the Business Innovation Factory Community Scholarship makes available complimentary tickets for the BIF annual Summit, which this year will be held on September 13th and 14th at Trinity Rep in Providence. BIF believes that no one should be excluded from experiencing the Summit due to their financial circumstances, which is why the Community Scholarship was established. Those wishing to be considered for a Scholarship should complete the application form. Applications are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis, and the number of Scholarships is limited — so don’t hesitate!
