Welcoming Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the Student Experience Lab
Teacher effectiveness can be the greatest single factor affecting student learning. With this insight in mind, and with excitement and anticipation, we welcome the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the Student Experience Lab.
During the next 16 weeks, the Lab will be doing a deep-dive into understanding the teacher experience. Specifically, how teachers understand and interpret the various formal and informal feedback mechanisms that are currently in play in their daily routines.
It's an important effort. Delivering on the promise of education requires wide scale change in the education field – from college readiness to degree attainment. Recognizing the strong connection between teacher effectiveness and student learning, the Foundation is seeking to better understand and invest in opportunities for improving teacher performance. The research the Student Experience Lab is about to embark on will provide a number of key outcomes:
- An understanding of how teachers experience feedback (both informal and formal) – where it comes from, how it is received, and what impact it has on performance. We want to understand what works well, and what fails to create change.
- A set of insights, related to teacher feedback, which can improve teacher effectiveness and the learning experience.
- A set of opportunity areas for exploration, experimentation and investment.
Additionally, with this expansion of our research platform, which, up until now, has been student-focused, we can only imagine the implications for innovation in the education space.
Stay-tuned - findings from the teacher feedback study will be released end of year.
